Education faces a structural tension between AI's genuine teaching capabilities - personalised tutoring, instant feedback, adaptive curriculum - and the deeply human elements of learning that resist automation. The sector is likely to see significant role transformation rather than wholesale displacement.

Adjunct lecturers and tutors, particularly for standardised or introductory courses, face meaningful pressure from AI tutoring platforms like Khan Academy's Khanmigo, which can provide personalised, patient, unlimited tutoring at near-zero marginal cost. Administrative roles - admissions processing, standard advising, grade entry - are being automated.

However, the core teaching relationship, particularly in K-12, is highly resistant to automation. Parents and students consistently show strong preference for human teachers. Social-emotional learning, classroom management, and mentorship require human connection that AI cannot replicate meaningfully.

Higher education faces more complex dynamics. Research-active faculty generate work that AI augments rather than replaces. Online education has already restructured the adjunct labor market. The long-term risk may be concentration: superstar online instructors teaching millions, supported by AI, while demand for ordinary instructors contracts.
